Media Services: Copy & Transfer to Digital
  • What is it?   When you copy content from one medium to another, this is a media transfer. Some media contain analogue content such as vinyl records, usually LPs — long-playing records at 33 1/3 rpm (revolutions per minute) — singles at 45 rpm, and cassette tapes. Other media contain digital content such as CDs and MP3 files.
  • Why would I want it?   Some listeners have records they cannot play because they don't have a record player or their equipment is broken. Others have switched to listening through a newer format such as an MP3 player and wish to hear some of their older collection. LPs and 45s wear a bit each time they're played, and for content that will be repeatedly played, it is desireable to transfer it to another media such as CD that can be played repeatedly with no wear or bad effect. Also, you might want to have a backup copy in case of damage or loss to the original.
  • Are you sure it's legal?   Yes, it's legal. The overzealous actions of certain groups have placed many false notions into the public. Fair Use Doctrine and numerous court cases have upheld this. You can make copies for purposes of time-shifting or listening on different equipment. The original intent of the copyright law was to make sure you would not duplicate and sell (or give away) the content.
  • How much does it cost?   There are turntables on the market now that offer a low end solution for around $150. This is a cheap turntable with cheap cartridge and stylus (or needle) that contains cheap electronics that hook to a USB port on your computer. For pop music, with its limited dynamics and high volume compression, this may suffice for a non-critical listener. Organ music, with its huge frequency range and dynamic range, requires better equipment to capture the full spectrum of quality from an LP. We use high quality equipment and perform all operations by hand: no free software is used! Prices are listed below.
