Clifford Demarest (1874–1946)

Sunset Back

Many compositions written in the early 20th century were of images depicting nature. This “sunset” was originally the third movement of “A Pastoral Suite,” published in 1913. Its lyric nature evoking a country scene of a time far removed from our present is similar to music that may have been heard accompanying theatre and film of the period. This arrangement by the composer was published in 1914. Clifford Demarest, born in New Jersey, was a pupil of Raymond Huntington Woodman (1861–1943, who studied with Dudley Buck and Cesar Franck), and organist of the Church of the Messiah, New York City. He was an Fellow of the American Guild of Organists and was its president from 1917–1920.
