Harry Clay Banks Jr (1889-1967)
lived most of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After organ and music theory study with
Harry Alexander
Matthews, he was organist-choirmaster in several Philadelphia Episcopal churches, including St Mary’s Church and St Luke and the
Epiphany (1937-1946). He was organist, teacher of piano and voice, and director of vocal music at Girard College in Philadelphia from
1918 until 1956. According to Harry Wilkinson, a student of Banks, “His was a
unique personality in which wit lightly tinged with sarcasm played a notable part.”
Noël nouvelet is a late 15th century French Christmas carol. Its primary English version is known as “Sing we now of
Christmas.” Several other texts have been set to this tune, including the Easter carol, “Now the green blade riseth.”
Banks, in this, his last published organ piece, places the tune in the pedals with toccata figurations in the manuals for the beginning
and end with a soft section in between. Moderate.
