Part of the Midnight Pipes series, this episode is all about the largest 19th century organ in the US. This imposing organ was installed originally into Boston Music Hall and was America's first concert (that is, not in a church) organ. It was of course moved to Methuen and has lived happily in its new home, the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, since 1897. Frederick Hohman played the organ and produced this program in 2002 for Zarex Corporation, parent company of Pro Organo. The great organ of Methuen, the IV/84 E F Walcker, Op 200 (1863) was enlarged and altered a few times in its history. Hohman's Ride of the Valkyries is my personal favorite recording of this great Lemare transcription. Fred Hohman is the founder of the Pro Organo record label, is a frequent judge at organ competitions, a favorite commentator on the Pipedreams radio program, and holds three degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he studied at length with David Craighead. He gives lectures and plays concerts throughout the world.
